Behind the Produce with Jackie Au

Jackie Au is the Senior Compliance and Tax Specialist for the Vanguard International Group of companies.  Jackie joined Vanguard in October of 2017. With offices in 8 countries, Jackie manages a global network that requires a deep understanding of not only compliance and tax laws, but also the many cultures that make up the multi-dimensional Vanguard International Group. Jackie does it all with a friendly smile and a willingness to support the entire team.

Let’s get to know Jackie a little more!

VG: Has Washington always been home, or did you re-locate for work?

Jackie: Washington has been my home for the last 4 years. We relocated to Washington from San Diego because of my husband’s job.

VG: As a relative new-comer to the world of fresh produce what has surprised you the most about the produce world?

Jackie: Variety! I was raised eating red (not) delicious apples. It wasn’t until I started working at Vanguard that I learned all about the different varieties of apples, stone fruit, cherries, and other fruits that we sell around the world.  And, it’s just amazing to eat our wonderfully delicious grapes from our farms in Peru!

VG: We are well into managing in a global pandemic – what have been the greatest challenges?  Any positive outcomes of a change in SOP?

Jackie:  My greatest challenge of the pandemic has been home schooling and staying safe/healthy, all while making sure all my Vanguard bases are totally covered.  The best part of this pandemic has been the precious time we have gained with our family. We have used this time to do more activities together whenever I’m not working.

VG: Whose day to you impact on a regular basis? Who hears from you the most?

Jackie: Every day at Vanguard is different!  Most days I work directly with the senior executive team to handle compliance, tax, and accounting requirements.

VG: What has been a memorable moment of your time with Vanguard?

Jackie: When I first started at Vanguard, our office took a trip to Wapato to see our new farming and packing operation. It was amazing to meet our team there and see how apples were packed and processed.

VG: What does your free time look like! Spending time with family, friends?

Jackie: During my free time, I always enjoy spending time with my family.  We try to take time to explore our new home state of Washington as much as we can. We will go to local trails to hike or parks to play. And when the weather is not great, we like to stay home and play board games or arts and crafts.

VG: Do you have a favorite produce item? If yes how do you prefer to eat it (Snack? Signature Recipe?)

Jackie:  My favorite produce item is the Opal apple. Simply sliced, as a snack.
