Recapping the Fall 2022 Conference Season

In October, the International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) hosted its first-ever Global Produce & Floral Show (GPFS) in Orlando, Florida. Attendees from approximately 40 countries attended the show, creating a buzz of energy from the education sessions to the show floor.

Post-pandemic, there was pent-up demand and excitement to have industry friends and colleagues back together. Once the first day’s events concluded, participants were eagerly streaming to nearby restaurants to continue their conversations. Attendees were clearly happy to see the industry coming back together in person again.

Even with the excitement to reconvene, conversations did center around the concern for the global markets, particularly those heavily supplied by the southern hemisphere producers. With once-promised demand out of China now completely uncertain, it is a unique time for many in the produce industry.

The conversation on this topic continued the following week when AsiaFruit Logistica returned, but this year it was held in Bangkok, Thailand instead of its traditional venue in Hong Kong.

After a three-year break, exhibitors and visitors took the opportunity to meet again with customers and colleagues, and gain new insights into the latest industry trends and innovations. Nearly 10,000 trade visitors from over 70 countries attended the Bangkok show. Some 420 exhibitors from 42 countries and regions showcased products and services, with 18 national and group pavilions. Australia was the single-largest exhibiting country, with the USA, Italy, New Zealand, and Thailand making up the top five exhibiting nations.

Our very own Craig Stauffer took a seat front and center for one of the event’s well-attended panels discussing Asia’s supply changes. Compared to pre-pandemic years, the crowds seemed lighter at this event.  As Asian restrictions continue to ease, we expect the conference floor will return to its previous levels next year.

Dates are already set for 2023 with IFPA’s Global Produce and Floral Show taking place October 19-21, 2023 in Anaheim, California and AsiaFruit Logistica set to return to Hong Kong September 6-8, 2023.
